Did you know that in Manchester there are seven different links to motorways in and around Manchester! This can be a daunting prospect when the time comes to drive on them, which is why our expert driving instructors at Drive Dynamics Manchester, give you the chance to do Advanced Driving courses leading to a Pass Plus qualification.
There is the M56 coming in to the City from the North, and then it exits the city again from the South, the M62 roars into the City from the North East and then exits from the South West, the M61 arrives in the City from a North Westerly direction, the M67 goes out due East from the City, and finally the M60, which is known as the Manchester Orbital or Ring Road, as it goes around the whole City. On a map it is akin to a spiders web of Motorways, that have the M60 in the centre of the web, holding a grip over Manchester!!
Rules of the Road for Motorway driving are very simple, if you stick to them! This is what causes most accidents, is when people don’t! The speed limit on the motorway is 70mph for all cars and motorcycles, but if you have a trailer on the back of your car, or a caravan, then the speed limit is 60mph.
To access the motorway, you need to drive down a slip road, which is usually 2 lanes, and indicate right to show the drivers on the motorway that you are waiting to get on to it. Do not slow down as you drive on, but match the speed to the drivers already on there. Once on the motorway, stay in the inside lane, the left hand one, and only use the middle lane or outside lane for overtaking. Take your driving lessons in Manchester with Drive Dynamics and let our expert instructors teach you all you need to know about the roads in Manchester. SUPERB!
Keep a safe distance from the other cars in front of you, using the two second rule, so that you can brake easily if necessary, and avoid collisions. In bad weather, the braking distance as its known, increases to 4 seconds apart, as visibility can get worse.
When you come to overtake a vehicle, indicate right, use your mirrors to check if clear, and pull out into the middle lane. Once you have overtaken, then indicate left, and get back into the inside lane again.
When exiting the motorway, keep an eye on the road signs for your desired exit, and indicate left well in advance to prepare drivers behind of your intentions. Drive off and on to the slip road, in the right lane for your next destination.
Drive Dynamics Manchester will stop you getting caught in the Motorway web!
